BOLLNÄS SPELMANSLAG

Bollnäsbygdens Spelmanslag is the name of the town Bollnäs’ local folk music orchestra, a group that was formed in 1934 with the goal of awakening, preserving and spreading the interest for folk music in Bollnäs primarily through active music making.

Today the group is known throughout all of Sweden. Their two CDs have sold throughout all of Scandinavia and have to a significant degree revitalised and redefined the genre.

The group has of late developed into something of a trademark within Swedish folk music. It has gone from merely preserving archived music toward stimulating development both stylistically and contextually, lifting folk music back up to a central position in today’s and tomorrow’s cultural arena. It’s training orchestra has become a fertile growing ground for younger musicians with professional aspirations.

The Spelmanslag is known for its variety, both in age (members range from 11-81) and breadth of activity, since many of its 70 active musicians participate in other bands and ensembles, amateurs as well as professionals. The Spelmanslag provides the common bond both amongst these people and to the traditions of the region.

In November 2009 the Spelmanslag won the title of Nordic Champions in folk music. During all of 2009 a film team has been working on a documentary covering the group. It will be screened 1 May 2010 and is entitled Spelmanslag—in tune with the times.
